“You made it to the START, you will make it to the FINISH“
Over the past couple of weeks, I had the amazing opportunity to be one of the volunteers at the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, specifically the Kids Race. During that time I got to stand at the finish line and give each of the little children their medals as they all came running across. This has been one of the best experiences I’ve had, seeing those big smiles of achievement that were making the kids glow. It wasn’t just the children but even their parents were overwhelmed with pride! These children and their parents made me want to laugh and smile in their joy, and it’s a day that I will never forget. The children would rush to me to ask me about if I enjoyed running and their parents would rush over to ask to take pictures. Again, continuously I was reminded of the impact that I had with my smallest actions.
Personally, I think this was a great intiative to get the children involved in a healthy lifestyle at a young age. A healthy body, always leads to a healthy mind and I truly believe exercise and a hobby that you love all direct into excellent mental health. Not only that, but the sense of accomplishment that these children were feeling as they made it to the end of the line is going to help motivate them in the future and become possible marathon runners. Now, running is not my most favourite thing to do, however when I do it I feel like I have accomplished something great, and my mind simply feels free!
While I was at the marathon, I seemed to impress Harry the Horse, our very own Calgary stampede mascot, and he definitely got me laughing in this next picture. I also ran into one of our very own Miss Teen Northern Calgary, Emily. It is great to see young women striving to help the community in every way possible and being outstanding role models for others watching. Young women like Emily continue to inspire me every single day.
